LIAZ Bus History

In 1869 engineer Emil Skoda founded a small mechanical enterprise in the city of Pilsen. Soon it turned into one of the largest in the whole Austro-Hungarian Empire. Since 1905, the production of heavy army trucks and tractors began here. And with the outbreak of the First World War, the factory completely switched to military orders.

After the war, the Skoda factory was located on the territory of the newly proclaimed Czechoslovakia and began the production of new 3-ton trucks. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Nazis in 1939, the plant was placed at their disposal and during the Second World War it produced military products for the needs of the Wehrmacht, including trucks.

Immediately after the liberation of Czechoslovakia, the plant was moved to Letnany (a suburb of Prague) to the territory of the former Avia aircraft plant. Production began with trucks Skoda 706, developed in the late 30's. However, in connection with the resumption of production of aircraft, the truck plant in 1951 was moved to the Leberetz region and included in the group of enterprises. The plant's products began to be exported, mainly to the countries of the socialist camp. In 1957, the new generation Skoda-706RT truck was developed and launched in the series, the main difference being the original cab above the engine.

In 1966, they were supplemented by similar models of the 706MT series, but with a more powerful engine. These generations of trucks have determined the fate of the plant for the next three decades. Trucks and tractors under the brand "Skoda", thanks to their quality and reliability, have become popular not only in the socialist countries of Europe, but also in China, North Korea, Vietnam, Egypt and Syria. In particular, in China the clones of the Czechoslovak "Skoda" were produced.

A special buyer of Czechoslovak trucks was the USSR. Here, starting from the late 50's, on-board trucks, dump trucks, as well as truck tractors with semi-trailers-refrigerators, which in the 60's and 80's became a real business card of Soviet truckers. Such refrigerated road trains were used in inter-district and inter-republican cargo transportation, and also traveled on international routes, mainly socialist countries. In the early stages, even the Sovtransavto was their operator.

The development of a new generation of heavy-duty road trucks to replace the RT and MT series began in the 60's. The first trucks are now under the brand LIAZ appeared in 1973, models 100.05 and 100.45. The plant hoped with their help to enter the western market. However, this did not happen. In the USSR LIAZ trucks of the 100 series began to be delivered only in 1982, mainly as long-distance road-trains-refrigerators. Despite the launch of the new 100 series in series production, the models of the old 706RT and 706MT families survived in production until the second half of the 80s. The collapse of the CMEA and the socialist camp seriously affected the LIAZ. Export fell sharply, so production declined. In September 1995, the plant passed the control of the heavy engineering company Skoda. Since 1997, the serial production of the new family 400 has begun. On September 5, 2003, production completely stopped. In the same year the company was bought out by private company Tedom.
