The company was founded in 1975 by the Ontario government called Ontario Bus Industries.
In 1982, the company opened its second plant in New York State.
In 1988, the company was the first bus manufacturer to produce buses with CNG and LPG engines.
In the early 1990s, the company began developing hybrid technologies.
In July 2000, Orion Bus Industries was acquired by DaimlerChrysler Corporation.

Orion II - "Community bus" 1984-2003. Produced with diesel and CNG engine.
Orion III - 1985-1988.
Orion IV - "People Mover" 1985-1989. It was produced with diesel and LPG engine.
Orion VI - 1996-2001. It was produced with diesel, CNG and LPG engines.
Current production
Orion V standard floor - since 1989. Available with diesel and CNG engine.
Orion VII - since 2001. Available with diesel, CNG engine, and hybrid version.
Hybrid buses
The hybrid bus scheme was developed in cooperation with the British company BAE Systems.
The bus has a 5.9-liter Cummins diesel engine with a capacity of 260 liters. from. (194 kW), an automobile generator of 120 kW, an electric motor with a capacity of 250 liters. from. (186 kW).
The hybrid Orion VII consumes 25-35% less fuel compared to conventional buses. Nitrogen oxide emissions are reduced by 40%, greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, aerosol particle emissions by 90%.
By September 2009, the company produced 2,200 hybrid buses. The largest fleet of hybrid buses Orion VII is operated in New York (1250 pieces).
