MAZ Bus History

Some MAZ Bus Operator Manuals & Wiring Diagrams PDF are above this page.

The history of MAZ bus production began with cooperation with the German automobile company "Neoplan". The Germans planned to create a "screwdriver" production of their buses in Minsk. Many of our readers probably remember this German technological wonder: a noiseless low-floor bus with tinted windows and a roomy cabin. He immediately won the hearts of Minskers. The "smart" electronics "MAZ-Neoplan" seemed inconvenient for the Belarusian mentality. Doors did not want to close at the bus stop, if one of the passengers stood close to them. And with our crush during peak hours, no one wanted to get out of the bus to allow the computer doors to close.

But this is only a curious illustration of the discrepancy between German and Belarusian thinking. The main disagreements between the Belarusian and German partners appeared later. Domestic auto enterprises needed to be loaded. Therefore, the Belarusians offered their own version of cooperation - up to 70% of components for assembling buses should be produced inside our country.

The Germans did not like this situation, they granted a license to the car manufacturers and offered the Belarusians to build their own national bus building independently in the hope that the task would prove to be unbearable. But the new branch MAZ, under the leadership of the then general director Sinegovsky, still produced its own products from most of the domestic components and with the engine of the Minsk Motor Plant, without the "intelligent" electronics closing the doors, which was not to the liking of Minsk residents. By the way, it is still not on Belarusian transport.

This is not the end of the intrigue. Most of the fleets of the capital, where the first samples of MAZ-103 and MAZ-104 were sent for testing, were not given the most favorable reviews about them. So easily formed at that time lobby supporters of Western purchases of vehicles for passenger transportation.

But the first domestic buses, albeit still noisy and with an unusually convenient mine for the engine, unusually high seats, gradually attracted Minsk citizens. They were the first decoration of the streets of Minsk, when it was still far from the program of accomplishment of the Belarusian capital.

It seems that the main trump of the new design was still a wide Neoplan-like salon, capable of accommodating all those wishing for a rush hour. In 1997, the city's articulated MAZ-105 bus was launched with a capacity of 200 people, which proved that the Minsk bus is a high world class for the CIS countries.

Readers of the older generation probably remember the crush in Lviv LAZs or Russian PAZs. It's hard to imagine what kind of pandemonium was going on during peak hours. It was a little easier in the Hungarian Ikarus, but they froze through into the frosts and walked all winter with the frosted windows. If the driver did not announce a stop on the radio, the passenger had to take them at random to avoid the necessary. In the summer, it was unbearably hot in them - the sun overheated the cabin through simple glass.

With buses in Minsk, most of the problems were solved - tinted windows, good heating of the spacious interior, low floor.

June 21, 2000 the 1000th bus of the MAZ brand was assembled. The following year, at the 5th Russian International Salon, the first sample of the low-floor triax bus MAZ-107 was recognized as the best in the nomination "Visitors' Salon Prize" as it gathered more visitors. In just a short history of its existence, MAZ received almost a dozen honorable awards and diplomas.
