Ikarus Bus History

Some IKARUS Bus Operator & Service Manuals PDF are above rhis page.

The starting point for the legendary "Ikarus" was 1885. A certain Imre Uri seriously takes a great interest in the creation of carts for horses. At some point, he intuitively begins to understand that soon the horses will no longer be the main transport.

The first large order for bus bodies Uri receives in 1927. At that time the buses were wooden, they were covered with steel sheets on the outside. Uri is experimenting with the chassis - he initially made buses based on the Ford-TT truck. A little later he had to switch to Mercedes-Benz.

In the thirties of the 20th century, Uri departed from business and transferred control of the company to his sons, and in 1933 the company was named Uri Brothers LLP. In 1939, the 1000th bus was assembled.

The name "Ikarus" became a bus trade mark after the firm "Brothers Uri", which produced cars and buses, was merged with the "Ikarus Joint-Stock Company for the production of cars and airplanes". In the name of the last "Ikarus" comes from the name of the mythical character Ikar. Similarly the origin of the name of the Serbian bus company Ikarbus.

During World War II, the war company produced airplanes, repaired automotive equipment for the Wehrmacht (since 1945 for the Soviet Army). In 1947 the company was nationalized and handed over to the Center for Heavy Industry. In 1948, it was merged with the nationalized joint-stock company Ikarus (founded in 1916). In 1949, based on two firms, the Ikarus plant was established. In 1962, Ikarus was joined by the General Mechanical Plant in Székesfehérvár.

In 1967, perhaps the most popular project in the history of Ikarus appeared. Ikarus-250 is beginning to be supplied to Moscow in large quantities. In 1984, the Hungarian company marked a kind of anniversary - the 200th Ikarus was assembled. In 1995, the company was included in the Guinness Book of Records.

Since 1984, most of the products have been exported, including to the USSR (over 90% of exports). With the liquidation of the CMEA and the disintegration of the USSR, it turned out to be without a main market, because of which the enterprise stopped mass production of buses and was divided. The first mass production shop in Budapest was closed in the early 90s, the production of buses in Székesfehérvár was reduced to a minimum, and the EAG in Budapest, which was the heir to the pre-war company, returned to assembling buses only for individual orders and for imported chassis.

From 1999 to 2006, the company was part of the Irisbus holding. In 2003, production at the company in Székesfehérvár was finally discontinued. In 2007, Ikarus C80, C83 and other models are being launched again. The new models are developed by the Hungarian bus company Auto Rad Controlle Kft and have been produced under the brand name ARC for several years already. But already in December 2007 the plant officially closes due to unprofitability.

In 2010, Gabor Seles decided to reopen Ikarus production, planning to produce models V134, E134, V187, E127 under the old brand], as well as the company continues to overhaul and modernize the buses of the 200th, 400th and C-series.

Gabor's attempt was a success, and in March 2013 Ikarus Tr187.2 was introduced, developed in cooperation with the Czech Skoda.

In November 2013, a line of 2014 model year buses was announced, the official presentation of which took place in the spring of 2014 in Budapest.

At its best, Ikarus produced up to 14,000 buses a year. Now the company continues to produce small lots in conditions of strong competition with numerous European companies.
